Receding chin: what is it?
A receding chin is a chin that is set back from the rest of the face. It creates a profile where the lower jaw is underdeveloped or recessed.
Features :
- A slightly marked profile giving the appearance of a “flat” or “round” face.
- Lack of definition between the chin and neck, which can accentuate the double chin effect.
- May be associated with retrognathia , that is, a recoil of the entire lower jaw.
What is this due to?
- genetic factors,
- insufficient bone growth of the mandible
What causes a receding chin?
- orthodontic problems (known as skeletal class II )
- sleep apnea
- snoring
Possible solutions for a receding chin:
- Orthodontics : Improves jaw alignment.
- Orthognathic surgery : To move the lower jaw forward if the problem is skeletal.
- Genioplasty (chin surgery) : This is a cosmetic surgery that involves projecting the chin forward, lengthening it or inserting a prosthesis.
- Hyaluronic acid injection : A temporary solution that will plump up the chin to harmonize the profile.
If this applies to you, medical advice (orthodontist or maxillofacial surgeon) will help you determine the best approach.
