Genioplasty - Chin reduction seen from the front
What is a “big chin”?
A prominent chin can disrupt facial harmony. From the front, this translates into a visually dominant lower jaw, which can give the face a harsh or masculine appearance, even in women. This morphology can be genetic or accentuated by factors such as excessive bone growth in the mandible.
Chin reduction genioplasty
Reduction genioplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects a protruding or overly large chin. Performed under general anesthesia, this surgery involves reshaping the bony part of the chin (the mental symphysis). The surgeon may proceed by:
- Retraction osteotomy : the chin bone is cut and moved back.
- Bone volume reduction : a thin strip of bone is removed to refine and shorten the chin.
- Smoothing or contouring : to soften the jaw line.
The goal is to restore an aesthetic balance between the lower face, the nose and the lips, especially visible from the front.

This chin reduction simulation shows that the size of the chin is reduced.
Visible results from the front
Before surgery (top of image), the chin appears prominent, lengthening the lower third of the face.
After the genioplasty simulation (bottom of the image), we observe:
- A softer and more harmonious jawline.
- A reduction in chin volume visible from the front.
- A more balanced face overall.
These results often contribute to a significant gain in self-confidence for patients.
Who is this surgery for?
This procedure is indicated for people with a chin that is too prominent or too wide .
When there are functional problems (discomfort closing the lips, malocclusion, etc.), the surgeon will have to operate on the jaw . This operation will often be combined with orthodontics.
Reduction genioplasty is a surgery that corrects a prominent chin and improves facial aesthetics from the front when there is no functional problem with the jaw, just an aesthetic one.
When the entire jaw is moved forward, the surgeon will suggest an osteotomy (intervention on the jaw)
