The receding chin or backward chin is characterized by a chin that is set back in relation to the other prominent elements of the face when seen in profile (forehead, nose, lips). It is one of the 3 types of chin .
Know if my chin is leaking
The easiest way to determine if your chin is protruding is to take a profile photo. By drawing a line parallel to your face, you can see whether your chin is more or less protruding from this line.
- The main feature is the small chin .
- There will be almost no hollow between the lower lip and the chin.
- Excess skin on the neck or a double chin may also be noticed.
- Often, the lower lip will be set back from the upper lip. The upper lip may even cover the lower lip.
- If the demarcation between the face and the neck is not very marked, this will be a characteristic but not exclusive sign of a receding chin.
There may be 3 causes (which can be combined):
- Underdeveloped cartilage and bones of the chin
- Lower jaw (mandible) too far back
- Upper jaw (maxilla) too far forward

Which professional can assess my receding chin?
Cosmetic surgeons and surgeons specializing in maxillofacial , stomatology and oral surgery are best placed to assess your chin. They may also perform an X-ray to observe the facial bone structure .

How can the surgeon adjust my chin backward?
After studying the shape of your chin, the surgeon will suggest a solution based on the problems encountered (aesthetics, dental malocclusion, snoring, sleep apnea, etc.).
The most common solutions for a pulled back chin are:
- hyaluronic acid injections (temporary effect)
- genioplasty (chin advancement surgery ) – cosmetic only
- jaw surgery (osteosynthesis) – aesthetic and functional benefits (malocclusion of teeth, sleep apnea, etc.)
You can assess your chin position using a profile photo. If you want an expert opinion, it’s best to consult a surgeon for an opinion.
