Casts, Splints and Dressings on the Nose After Rhinoplasty

Is a cast necessarily applied after rhinoplasty?

Not necessarily; it will depend on the surgeon and the procedure. Surgeries involving the tip of the nose and nostrils do not require a cast. However, surgeries that affect the nasal bone will be more common. Sometimes, the surgeon must fracture the nasal bones to reduce their size or move them.

Is this the same cast as for a broken arm?

No, surgeons generally use resins. They are better tolerated by the skin and more comfortable for the patient to wear (lighter).

How long should I keep the cast on after surgery?

It is recommended to keep the cast on for 5 to 10 days, allowing time for the structures of the nose to consolidate and heal.

My cast is moving, should I be worried?

No, it’s actually a good sign; it means the nose is starting to go down. Don’t hesitate to contact your surgeon’s office if you have any doubts.

What should I do if my cast itches?

If the itching becomes unbearable, it is advisable to return to see your surgeon, who will remove the cast if he judges that the bone has had sufficient healing time.

What method can replace plaster?

Some operations or surgeons will prefer the use of splints to support the nasal structures while they begin to heal. The most well-known are Doyle splints. Some splints can be removed by the patient themselves after a few days. It is also possible to use the taping method (self-adhesive strips).

What are highlights?

Packs are mouthpieces placed in the nostrils to maintain sufficient space for air to pass through and prevent tissue from sticking together during healing (nasal obstruction). They also limit swelling and bleeding. They are made of tulle (rolled medical fabric). The surgeon will cover them with grease (Vaseline or greasy cream) so that they can be removed painlessly. Packs can be replaced with internal splints.

How long should you keep the highlights in?

The wicks should be kept in place for 1 to 5 days. Surgeons now recommend removing them quickly so that nasal cavities can be washed.

How many nasal cavities should I do (when I don’t have wicks)?

During the first week after surgery, it is recommended to rinse your nasal passages 8 to 10 times a day. Surgeons recommend using saline solution. To remove crusts, you can apply gomenoleic oil after washing.

What is nasal taping?

This is a strong, elastic adhesive bandage that applies light compression to the nose to help reduce swelling and promote proper healing. It should be reapplied every 1 to 2 days. It can be applied only at night.
