What are bags under the eyes?

The lower eyelid contains three fatty compartments. Excess fat in one of these compartments (or all three) will cause bags under the eyes. The lower eyelid can also become swollen with water during the night (humidity, lying down, etc.), especially when camping. In this second case, the bags under the eyes are temporary and will go down during the day.

As the body stores more and more fat, and the skin becomes more distant with age, the bags under the eyes will become larger and will gradually fall. This does not pose a medical problem in itself, except for possible dryness of the eye due to a lower eyelid that does not close properly (ectropion). However, it can give a sad appearance and cause aesthetic and moral damage. 

The pockets are even more visible when they are colored .

What causes bags under the eyes?

Bags under the eyes can be explained by several factors:

Heredity

Bags under the eyes are a hereditary trait, meaning they are passed on in the genes from parents.

Aging of tissues

Aging skin causes tissue to loosen and therefore the eyelid to sag. The resulting crease will create a shadow and make the bag very visible when light comes from above, which is often the case.

Lifestyle

Stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, fatigue… can promote the formation of bags under the eyes over time.

How to get rid of bags under the eyes?

Applying cold (a hot water bottle placed in the refrigerator beforehand) will have an immediate effect on the bags, but this effect will not last.

When the bags are too large and cause mental distress, it is possible to perform surgery to remove the bags under the eyes or reduce their size. This operation is called blepharoplasty .

The surgeon will make an incision inside the eyelids or under the eyelashes to remove fatty tissue and excess skin. The operation leaves few or very slight scars that will go unnoticed in the folds of the face.
