Bump on the nose - Rhinoplasty
The hump on the nose can be more or less significant. It is of genetic origin, that is to say inherited from the genes of the parents. The cause of the humped nose is an outgrowth of the bones of the bridge of the nose (bones and/or cartilages). The nose being the most visible element of the face seen in profile, it attracts all eyes, as much in men as in women .
Types of humped noses:
- Bump on the tip of the nose
- Slight bump
- Big bump
- Hard bump on the nose
- Angular bump
- Prominent nose
- Bump on the bridge of the nose

The hump is most visible from the side . A hump on the nose can be beautiful and give a beautiful, harmonious face. Conversely, the hump can be considered unsightly or ugly and create complexes and a lack of self-confidence.

Why do we have a hump on our nose?
In the vast majority of cases, a bump on the nose is due to genetic causes. In fact, a person with this physical characteristic will often find the same bump in their parents and grandparents; it is hereditary.
From a functional perspective, a hump often signifies large nasal septa that allow for proper breathing. However, it can also be a sign of deviated nasal septa and difficulty breathing. With evolution, we exercise less than our ancestors, who hunted and worked in the fields. This would explain the decrease in the size of the nose over the centuries.
A humped nose can also occur as a result of an accident or trauma. This type of nasal fracture is common in sports such as mountain biking, basketball, and contact sports (MMA, boxing, combat sports, hockey, etc.). The hump will be temporary when it is caused by edema (blood swelling under the skin) or permanent when there is a fracture that has healed, changing the shape of the nose.
Finally, a swollen nose can be caused by a skin infection, but cases are rare and the bump will be “soft.”
How does the surgeon remove the hump on the nose?
To remove the hump , the surgeon will intervene and plane or cut it. This is a correction of the nasal hump .
The surgeon will make incisions in the nostrils. These incisions do not leave visible scars. This is called closed rhinoplasty . He will also sometimes need to make an incision on the columella (the piece of skin that separates the two nostrils) in order to have extensive access to the structures of the nose. This scar will be visible but very discreet. In this case, it is called open rhinoplasty and the recovery is longer and more painful.
Once the surgeon has access to the bone and cartilage structure of the nose, he will cut or fracture the part he wishes to remove (osteotomy). It is also possible to plane the top of the nose.
This is done with surgical milling machines or with ultrasonic devices that operate using piezoelectricity (micro-vibrations). The advantage of ultrasonic devices is that they cause less damage to the surrounding tissue.
This type of rhinoplasty often requires general anesthesia and an overnight hospital stay. However, some surgeons perform the procedure on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia for minor operations.
What is medical rhinoplasty?
Some doctors offer to treat the hump on the nose medically without surgery using hyaluronic acid injections . However, these corrections are temporary and are rarely used in the case of a hump.
At what age can you have a bump removed from your nose?
Surgeons advise waiting until the end of growth and adolescence, i.e. 16/17 years for girls and 18/19 years for boys.
In all cases, the person must be psychologically stable and have carefully considered the operation.
What are the risks of rhinoplasty?
Risks associated with any surgical operation:
- infections
- bad reaction to anesthetic products
- heavy bleeding
- hematomas (they are systematic but generally fade completely after 3/4 weeks)
Risks associated with rhinoplasty specifically:
- asymmetrical nose
- disappointment with the result compared to expectations
The operation is sometimes accompanied by nostril surgery .
